No one likes to imagine the worst-case scenario, but as a responsible business owner, you have no choice but to see the bad before the good. After all, the investments that you make in the future of your organization mean nothing if you have no power to preserve it in the event of unfortunate circumstances. Due to the nature of technology, it is an ideal place to start thinking about preventative and proactive measures to keep your future secure.
Murphy’s Law states, “If something can go wrong it will go wrong.” You might be thinking to yourself, “Yes, that sounds about right.” Businesses often have to plan for the worst-case scenario in all aspects of operations. In fact, it’s the reason why insurance exists; it’s there specifically on the off-chance that something horrific and unexpected happens, whether it’s for health insurance, home insurance, or auto insurance.
Nowhere is this more true than with your IT infrastructure. Consider the many moving parts that keep your IT working as it’s supposed to. You have your server units, workstations for all of your employees, the software solutions that they utilize on a day-to-day basis to stay productive, and so much more. Then you also have to factor in the plethora of emails that each of them receives day-in and day-out, as well as the files downloaded off the Internet, the sites they visit, the people they talk to on the phone, and other activities that they might use the Internet for.
It all might seem overwhelming, but that’s the point we are trying to illustrate. When so much is involved in keeping your organization on its feet, chances are that something will go wrong eventually. When this day comes, you do not want to be forced into a reactive stance. The better position to be in is a proactive one where you have already taken the necessary precautions against perceived challenges and threats your organization may run into in the future.
This is obviously a tall order, as for many small businesses, IT is not their focus. Instead of ensuring that IT is in proper working order, businesses might do the bare minimum just to keep up with business as usual. This is a dangerous practice to fall into, as without the proper preparation and preventative maintenance, who’s to say what could befall your organization? There’s just no telling when something could go wrong.
With the appropriate solutions in place, however, you might find that you can predict when at least some of these difficult situations might present themselves. For example, with a remote monitoring tool, you can get notified of when your technology starts to show the signs of failure, thus giving you time to step in and act before it actually fails. The same can be said for network security; by keeping threats out of your network in the first place, you are reducing the risk of security breaches that could spell trouble for your business.
