Why (and How) to Disable Wi-Fi Calling

Users of Android devices might notice that they have the option to make a call using their Wi-Fi in addition to using their mobile service or data. While there is certainly something to be said for using a wireless connection when you don’t have mobile service, there are circumstances when you might not want to default to using a Wi-Fi connection.

Why Disable Wi-Fi Calling?

Now, why would you want to disable these call settings? Well, consider reasons why you would want to use your mobile data over Wi-Fi and you won’t have to think too hard on this. Imagine trying to buffer a video on YouTube over a slow wireless connection when you could instead stream it effortlessly using your mobile data. Nobody wants to have a choppy conversation, and depending on where you’re located, the connection might not be all that secure, either. Still, if you have a reliable wireless connection, you can save your mobile data plan by using Wi-Fi calling.

All that said, let’s go into how you can disable Wi-Fi calling on your Android smartphone. Keep in mind that the settings used to demonstrate this might vary depending on the operating system.

How to Disable Wi-Fi Calling

A quick way to disable Wi-Fi calling on your Android device is to head to your Settings app. From here, you go to Wi-Fi & Network, then proceed to SIM & Network. Select your SIM card, then turn off your Wi-Fi calling. Once the slider is in the Off position, you should have disabled Wi-Fi calling on your Android device.

You can also disable Wi-Fi calling mid-call if you notice that you are having trouble hearing the other party or if you discover you are breaking up a bit. Just tap the button for Wi-Fi calling from the call menu.
